Farmers markets open, EBT/SNAP options

Tree buds have sprouted into leaves. Flowers are in bloom. The only thing missing from your local farmers market, is you!

Mid-June in Minnesota is prime picking season for the state’s earliest fresh food bounty. Markets have opened across the Range offering locally grown produce. SNAP customers can shop area farmers markets in Cook, Hibbing, Tower and Virginia thanks to AEOA’s facilitation of staff and equipment enabling EBT purchases.

“Farmers markets are much more than a place to buy fresh produce; they are a vital part of building a healthier and more connected community,” said Carrie Pellinen, AEOA Food Access Manager. “Every dollar spent at a farmers market is an investment in community health, food security and the sustainability of local agriculture.”

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you can find baked goods, eggs, traditionally canned goods and craft items. Markets provide a venue to meet neighbors, make new friends and sample new treats. Many markets also host local musicians.

Pellinen added that programs like EBT, matching Market Bucks and Power of Produce tokens can help boost purchase power and provide more food for families.

“We help ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has access to fresh, locally grown foods. These programs not only support families in making healthy food choices, but they also strengthen our local economy by supporting area farmers,” Pellinen said.
