Head Starts unite for skills session

Arrowhead Head Start staff spent a day refreshing their preschool curriculum skills Friday, March 6, at Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia.

Attendees were part of an interactive, “I am Moving, I am Learning,” presentation led by Brandon Williams, Teacher Learning Consultant, of Early Childhood TLC based in Pennsylvania. The program explores strategies to improve classroom routines, transitions and Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) scores.

Accompanied by a guitarist, Williams demonstrated how the use of music and movement can enhance early childhood learning. Colleagues danced around tables together, did the penguin walk and played baby, mama and daddy shark guitars as part of the edutainment experience.

The agency invited nearby Head Start programs to Friday’s event. West Central Minnesota Communities Action Head Start staff joined Arrowhead employees in the enrichment opportunity.  Around 80 early childhood educators and support staff were in attendance.

Arrowhead Head Start Director Gabe Johnson said the event was made possible by a supplemental Head Start grant. AEOA was awarded the grant in October which has enabled the program to contract with a dietitian and attain equipment to keep kids active and moving.
