4th Annual Block Party (photo gallery)
In a backyard barbecue style event, AEOA brought more than 1,000 community members together for a neighborhood block party. AEOA’s 4th Annual Block Party took place on a picturesque summer day in the agency’s parking lot downtown Virginia on Thursday, July 23.
Staffed by 20 AEOA employee volunteers, the event featured an inflatable obstacle course for the kids, glitter tattoos and a photo booth for anyone, and music for everyone by D&J Sound. A race car and Virginia Public Utilities equipment was also on display.
“Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help,” said AEOA Executive Secretary Jessica Zollar. “Without all of you, the event would not be a success! We have heard many positive comments and gratitude from our neighbors throughout the night.” Zollar coordinated the event. She noted a special thanks to the agency’s Senior & Nutrition department for providing food for the day.
Community members were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, cookies and refreshing water. More than 1,220 meals were served.
Drawings for 40 prizes, a total value of $2,096, were held throughout the evening with 1,056 individuals registering for a chance to win.
Attendees had the chance to talk with representatives from 36 community partners offering services to individuals and families during the event (many are featured in our photo gallery).
The agency hosted its first community block party in 2023 to give people a chance to meet their neighbors, strengthen bonds within the community and forge new friendships. The block party aligns with the agency’s mission to strengthen communities by providing opportunities for people experiencing social and economic challenges.
